How Boyerma Lost Lover, Friends Over Afrobeats

Rivers State native, Emmanuel Gbara, known to fans as Boyerma, is a rising star in the Afrobeats world. His path to success, however, was not without challenges. Starting his musical journey in a church choir led by his mother, Boyerma always felt a pull toward secular music, specifically RnB and hip hop.

"It all began in church when I was 13," Boyerma recalls. "I loved singing gospel, but I found myself constantly drawn to other genres. I wanted to express myself in a way that gospel music couldn't always allow."

As Boyerma entered university, his passion for music grew. He performed at school concerts and started getting gigs beyond the campus. But the moment he decided to move away from gospel music and embrace Afrobeats, his personal life took a hit. "I lost so many friends, even my girlfriend," he says, "but I kept going because I believed in myself and my music."

Finding his sound was a long journey, but when he discovered Afrobeats, everything clicked. Boyerma’s single Anthem became a street favorite, earning him recognition and more connections in the industry. He’s currently working on a new music video and preparing to release a single next month. This track not only resonated with listeners but also grabbed the attention of industry professionals, including the prestigious Andachi Entertainment. Led by Mr. David Anaba, Andachi Entertainment had already garnered a reputation for recognizing and nurturing emerging talent within the Nigerian music industry. It was clear to Anaba that Boyerma possessed a distinctive sound and potential that, with the right guidance, could elevate him to new heights.

In 2022, after a series of discussions, Boyerma signed an official recording deal with Andachi Entertainment, marking a pivotal moment in his career. Boyerma and Anaba worked to create his debut EP, channelling his personal stories, struggles, and passions into a collection that showcased not only his growth as an artist but also his musical versatility.  "My music comes from within," Boyerma says. "It’s all about what I’ve been through and what I’m going through. I pour everything into my songs, and you can feel that when you listen."

Criticism from the gospel community and negative comments on social media haven’t deterred him. "At first, it hurt," Boyerma admits, "but then I realized, I’m doing this for me. No one else needs to approve. I love my process, even my mistakes. It’s therapy for me."

Now, with his sights set on a tour across Africa and collaborations with artists like Olamide, Boyerma is more focused than ever. "I’ve always admired Olamide’s style and bounce," he shares. "He’s a real Godfather in the industry, and I’d love to have him on a track."

For Boyerma, the future is clear. "I can’t imagine a life without music," he says. "I’m not doing this for fame or approval. I’m doing it because it’s who I am. Music is everything to me."

With his unwavering determination and authentic sound, Boyerma is set to make a lasting mark on the Afrobeats genre.
